Research Blog 3

One of the questions we asked is "how exactly are residents being affected by the gentrification of their neighborhood". Well for starters the residents cant afford to live in the neighborhood due to the increase of rent so they're being evicted, buildings are also being rebuilt and transformed into condos for people of higher income. One 96 year old photographer made an article about the gentrification on http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/photos/96-year-old-photographer-rebecca-lepkoff-brings-east-side-back-focus-article-1.1039695?localLinksEnabled=false

Research Blog Part 2

So we do know that the Lower East Side also known as the LES is changing  negatively and positively but how much exactly is it changing ? More negatively or more positively ? It seems like its changing, in my opinion in a more negatively manner due to the fact that lots of the culture that they're destroying by kicking people out with the high priced living tenaments and the businesses that are being destroyed. Although the Lower East Side is cleaning up and becoming a better neighborhood.. its also destroying culture and the lower East Side is becoming an endangered neighborhood as its slowly changing into something its not.

Research Blog

My group and I are researching in the growing epidemic of gentrification going on in the Lower East Side. Gentrification is when a society or community changes throughout time. Is the Lower East Side changing for better or for worse? That's what we are trying to find out!

Research says that although the Lower East Side is improving and their are less drugs its also very expensive. People cant afford to live here anymore and its getting herder for old mom and pop businesses to strive due to all the new businesses in the area. Rent is also getting hard due to the change of people in the neighborhood. So is it changing more for the better or for the worse?  Here are questions we will be exploring in the film:

  • Is the Lower East Side changing for the better or for the worse ?
  • How exactly are residents being affected ?
  • How exactly are bussiness being affected ?

Our film will be about gentrofication going on in the Lower East Side, also known as LES. We have interviewed a couple of restaurants along the neighborhood that have been their for generations. Two of those restaurants are Kat'z and Castillo's, we asked owners how the neighborhood as a whole has changed throughout the years and how has the economy affected your business.

Open up the link below for a picture of the famous restaurant known as Castillo's :

Cinematograhy Blog

I attended a cinematography class with Arriana and she taught us about different camera shots, including: zoom in shot, close shot, medium shot, large shot and B-roll and many more. For the interviews I think I'm leaning towards a medium shot so that it can keep it can keep a serious kind of flow to it. Im also probably going to have a B-roll of the neighborhood so that people can get a glimpse of what kind of community the Lower East Side is .

Here are proffesional explanations of some of the many shots we will be using in our film:

To Be Heard Review

I recently watched the film "To Be Heard" by Edwin Martinez, Roland Legiardi-Laura, Deborah Shaffer, Amy Sultan, Adrian Martinez and Maisha Winn. Its about three teenagers living in the ghettos of New York City dealing with poverty and family issues; along with how they deal with their issues through poetry. Without poetry they wouldn't have been able to survive through it all. I really enjoyed the film because even though I don't have it as bad, whenever i get stressed out I write rhymes to to air it all out.
